If you own flash drives, usb pendrives or external Hard drives then you might have observed that all of them comes with default FAT32 File System instead of the normal NTFS File system that is used in Windows regular Hard disk partitions. Both FAT32 and NTFS are the two different types of file system used in Windows based computers and therefore before proceeding to our main topic that is how to convert FAT32 to NTFS Without formatting or data loss it is better that we should get aware about FAT32 and NTFS File system and why there is a need to convert FAT32 to NTFS.
Difference Between Fat32 And Ntfs File System :
FAT/FAT32 means File Allocation Table a type of file system that is used by Microsoft Windows Operating system for keeping a track over the files stored in the hard disk. The number 32 denotes the number of bits required required to keep track of the files. FAT32 uses small clusters and hence uses space more effectively therefore it is best suited for small scale portable storage devices like memory cards, pendrives, flash drives etc.It has a limited capacity of maximum 4GB file size.
Whereas NTFS File system is much more complex as compared to FAT32 but it is very fast, robust and efficient also. It has advanced features and functionalities making use of advanced data structures to improve reliability, disk space utilization and overall performance.
Why Convert Fat32 To Ntfs File System?
As discussed above both are the two different kinds of file system used by Windows to keep track of files stored in hard drives but apart from the normal performance differences there is a major difference between these two file systems that is FAT32 file system allows only for up to 4GB of maximum single file size as compared to NTFS File system where there is no such restriction and you can transfer files of much greater size without any issues.
How To Convert Fat32 To Ntfs Without Formatting Or Data Loss?
Generally there is a direct procedure to convert FAT32 to NTFS or vice versa by changing the file system to the desired one and then formatting but this is undesirable for users who don’t want to lose their data and at the same time wants to convert the file system from FAT32 to NTFS without losing data therefore here below is a simple procedure to convert FAT32 to NTFS without formatting or data loss via command prompt.
Connect your pen drive or external drive to your system and note down its drive letter i.e C:, F: etc.
Open your command prompt Go to RUN and type cmd in the box and hit ENTER.
Type following command chkdsk G: /f (Where G: is the drive letter that you have noted)
Type Convert G: /FS:NTFS and hit Enter and it will now ask for label i.e Enter Current Volume label here enter the name of your pendrive or external drive.
start the conversion process.
Wait for few minutes till you get a successful conversion message.
That’s it and you can now check the status of your pen drive or external drive by opening its properties.
Note – This method can be used only for converting FAT32 to NTFS and it is not applicable for NTFS to FAT32.
